An engaged community is one where people participate in civic affairs, are attached to the place where they live and are invested in their community\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>As social investors, we spot and advance community trends, act as early adopters of ideas and support the individuals and spaces that shape our cities&#8217; futures.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>Our investments to promote more engaged communities include:<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<ul><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<li><strong>Downtown and Neighborhood Revitalization:<\/strong> Making an area more livable, attractive and economically vibrant by improving, developing and restoring downtowns and neighborhoods.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"rich-text\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/topics\/public-spaces\/\"><strong>Public Spaces<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>Connecting people to the places where they live by supporting the programming, design and construction of inclusive and equitable public spaces.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"rich-text\">\n<li><strong>Economic Opportunity:<\/strong> Attracting and retaining residents by advancing inclusive pathways to jobs and entrepreneurship.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"rich-text\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/smart-cities-2\/\"><strong>\u201cSmart Cities\u201d as Responsive Cities<\/strong><\/a>: Helping cities make decisions that are more responsive to residents as digital technology reshapes our lives and shifts the ways in which communities are informed and engaged.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where we work <\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1152\" height=\"601\" src=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/KF-communities-2.jpeg?w=1152\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-289226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/KF-communities-2.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/KF-communities-2.jpeg?resize=768,401 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1152px) 100vw, 1152px\" \/><\/figure>\n<div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>We fund primarily in eight cities where the foundation has resident program officers, including Akron, where our founders started Knight Newspapers, and Miami, where their business was eventually headquartered. We invest through grantmaking directly from our endowment and from endowed donor-advised funds (DAF) at local community foundations in the Knight communities.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>In the 18 cities where our foundation does not have a program director living in the community, we primarily work with community foundation leaders and local advisory committees to identify investment opportunities that support engaged, inclusive and equitable communities.
